Spare change can change the world.

In September 2024, Richard J. Rundle Elementary School in Las Vegas continued the fight against pediatric cancer by hosting a fundraiser for TRF during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The event, called "Change the World," rallied students, families and staff to make a difference by collecting spare change and donations. Thanks to the incredible dedication of Rundle's school community, over $2,600 was raised to support TRF’s mission of providing financial and emotional assistance to families facing pediatric cancer.

This remarkable effort from Richard J. Rundle Elementary demonstrates the power of community and compassion in making a lasting impact. TRF is deeply grateful for the school's support and the generosity that will help bring hope and relief to families in need.

The success of Richard J. Rundle Elementary School’s “Change the World” fundraiser is an inspiring example of how schools can come together to support families impacted by pediatric cancer. By collecting spare change, this school proved that even small acts of giving can make a monumental difference.

How Schools Can Support Pediatric Cancer Families

Schools nationwide can join this compassionate cause and create their own fundraising events to support pediatric cancer families in their communities. These efforts not only make a tangible impact for families but also foster a spirit of empathy, awareness and community involvement among students.

Ideas for School Fundraisers

  1. “Change the World” Change Drive
Just like Rundle Elementary, your local school can host a change drive where students bring in spare coins and donations over the course of a week or month. Each classroom can set a goal and compete to collect the most, encouraging teamwork and engagement. This simple yet impactful approach allows all students to participate and feel a sense of accomplishment as they contribute directly to helping families in need.
  2. Spirit Days for Support
Schools can organize themed days, such as “Gold Out” Days (gold being the color for Childhood Cancer Awareness) where students dress in gold or yellow to show solidarity. Participation can be tied to a small donation, with funds going to pediatric cancer families. Schools can also add elements like a “Hat Day” or “PJ Day,” making it fun and memorable for students.
  3. Art for Awareness
Incorporating creativity, students can craft gold ribbons, posters or bracelets as part of an art project to sell during school events. Proceeds from sales can support pediatric cancer families, while students spread awareness. Art projects can also be displayed throughout the school or shared with the community to honor families and children affected by cancer.
  4. Walk-a-Thon or Read-a-Thon
Hosting an event like a Walk-a-Thon, where students collect pledges for each lap they walk, or a Read-a-Thon, where they seek donations per book or chapter read, can be engaging and impactful. These events encourage physical activity and literacy while raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer.
  5. School Talent Show or Benefit Concert
Schools can showcase student talent while supporting a cause. With entry fees, donations or ticket sales going to pediatric cancer families, a talent show or concert gives students a platform to shine while contributing to a meaningful mission.

How TRF Supports School Fundraisers

TRF offers resources and support to help schools host successful fundraisers, including promotional materials, event ideas, and information to share with students and families about the impact of their efforts. Each participating school receives updates on how funds are making a difference, connecting students to the families they’re supporting and demonstrating the power of their collective contributions.

The Impact of School Fundraisers

Every dollar raised through school initiatives provides critical assistance to families facing the emotional and financial challenges of pediatric cancer. Parents and staff can play an active role in lifting up families, inspiring kindness, and creating lasting memories for students who learn the power of giving back. Schools like Richard J. Rundle Elementary set a powerful example of how, together, we can truly “Change the World” for those in need.
