Iggy: Our Youngest Warrior
Say hello to Ignacio, or as his family calls him, Iggy – a brave and fearless 3-year-old from New Mexico. Iggy's life took an unexpected turn on October 31, 2023, when he was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare pediatric cancer. Despite his young age, Iggy has shown remarkable strength, inspiring his family and everyone around him as he faces his diagnosis head-on.
In January 2024, the family joined TRF while Iggy was undergoing treatment at two of our partner hospitals: University of New Mexico Children’s Hospital and MD Anderson - Houston, Texas. At just 3 years old, Iggy has already undergone numerous complex and invasive procedures, including bladder removal surgery, feeding tubes, radiation, and over 66 weeks of oral and infusion chemotherapy. Through it all, Iggy has remained strong, and his family has seen the incredible progress he’s made, reaching maintenance treatment with “No Evidence of Disease.” Thanks in part to our Signature and Travel Grant Programs, Iggy’s family has been able to remain by his side as they travel for his care.
Iggy is surrounded by the love and support of his parents, Monique and Manuel, and his constant companion, his big brother Francisco. They share a love for Monster Trucks, Hot Wheels and Ghostbusters, and enjoy cheering for their hometown soccer team, New Mexico United. Despite the challenges they’ve faced, Iggy and his family celebrate every milestone with what they call the "Signature Iggy Dance," a moment of pure joy and triumph.
Though the journey has been tough, they can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. Iggy’s resilience and the unwavering support of his family have carried them through. They are filled with hope as they continue to watch their little warrior thrive.
“There have been hard days, but Iggy is recovering well from surgery and is doing fantastic,” says proud mom, Monique. “He recently celebrated his third birthday and we are so excited and proud of him!”
