This month’s spotlight child is Emerson Hemmert.
When Emerson was 2 1/2 years old he began to limp and complained that “legs hurt” and “hurts to walk.” His family took him to the chiropractor, pediatrician, and ER several times. After what seemed like an eternity of no answers, the Hemmert family was referred to a pediatric center blood specialist in their hometown. Initially doctors believed that Emerson had juvenile arthritis or a virus but the Hemmert’s lives turned upside down when Emerson was diagnosed with Leukemia on August 11, 2016. Emerson was rushed away to be hospitalized for port surgery and the beginning of chemotherapy. The family was heartbroken and spent every minute of the day and night praying for tests, surgeries, and procedures to go well. Over the last year they’ve spent many weeks at the hospital, fought through rounds and rounds of chemo, and welcomed Emerson’s baby sister into the world.
Emerson’s father reached out to the Tyler Robinson Foundation when he found hope in the TRF Family Lounge in Sunrise Children’s Hospital in Las Vegas. Emerson’s dad shared the following:
“I would often go to the lounge to cry and collect myself so I could stay strong for my son and wife. We were given a TRF grant and it came as an answer to multiple prayers. The TRF family has given us hope and courage when we felt like we had none. The money that we have, and will receive, will help us keep our home and pay down debt that came along with the cancer diagnosis. We will be eternally grateful for the young man, Tyler Robinson, and for all of the good he did, and continues to do for others.“
